What to See
Ameglia is a typical Ligurian hilltop village. Its tall pastel coloured houses form a compact structure. Once inhabited by farmers and fishermen, the town has ancient origins. A Ligurian Iron Age necropolis from 4th century B.C. was discovered in the nearby hamlet of Cafaggio. In the Roman Era it was a bulwark, which protected the port of Luni. Luni was a strategic commercial port for the whole Mediterranean. Ameglia was also an important town in the middle ages. The following medieval structures can still be seen: an ancient tower, the embattled city walls and an imposing palazzo which now houses the town hall. Fiumaretta is a nearby seaside village, with sandy beaches and many bathing establishments. Bocca di Magra is located at the mouth of the Magra River. Bocca di Magra boasts a modern marina and tourist structures. The ruins of a Roman seaside villa (Villa Marittima Romana) are located there. Part of the area surrounding Ameglia belongs to the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Park. The Park offers hiking trails for everyone. (info: www.parcomagra.it ).The enchanting village of Montemarcello, located on a hill facing the sea, has been awarded the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” title ( the most beautiful villages in Italy).
