What to see and do
The town of Arcola (Arcula) was a Roman military outpost during the struggles between Rome and the Ligurian tribes. Arcola is set on a hilltop and has a typical compact Ligurian defence structure. It was later dominated by the Castello degli Obertenghi, a 10th century castle, of which only the pentagonal tower remains. The 15th century Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli is located near Arcola and can be visited daily.
Trebiano, an ancient nearby village, offers a beautiful view of the valley. S. Michele, its parish church, with a 16th century façade, and the ruins of its hilltop castle, shouldn’t be missed.
The territory of Arcola has a lot to offer tourists: its delicious local wines and cuisine; lovely walks through its vineyards and surrounding ancient olive groves; and various sports options.
Many easy footpaths are located along the Magra River. This area is part of the Regional Park of Montemarcello-Magra (info: www.parcomagra.it).
