What to see and do
Riccò
del Golfo has ancient origins. It was formed from two bordering
hamlets, Ponzò and Carpena. These hamlets were often disputed over,
because of their strategic position. These struggles and time have
destroyed most of the historical traces. Carpena was more important
than La Spezia in the middle ages. In the village of Ponzò, ruins of a
round based medieval castle and a 12th century chapel dedicated to San
Bartolomeo can still be seen. Spontaneous Ligurian architecture,
linking townhouses, connected by arches and vaults, can be found in the
surrounding villages.
Many footpaths connect Riccò del Golfo with
the rest of the Vara Valley, the Gulf of La Spezia and the Cinque
Terre. One of the main footpaths is the Sentiero CAI n. 7, which passes
through the village of Casella, leading on to Vernazza and the Cinque
Terre. The natural surroundings are beautiful and completely
uncontaminated.
